During Vanessa Marr’s workshop on 5th July, she asked participants to think of words we associated with different concepts relating to academia, and then enter them in the Zoom Chat. Since her screen sharing set-up meant she couldn’t see them, she asked for them to be read out loud, which had the effect of highlighting patterns of affect and idea: it became collective poetry. Preserving these words anonymously, Vanessa was inspired by The Anthology of Concrete Poetry (ed. Emmett Williams) to create concrete poems using the words, with shapes that evoke the complex and often ambivalent responses by participants to Research, Teaching, Play, Productivity, and Nurture.
